Lets turn off the lights

It's Saturday night and about 9pm and I'm walking passed the public toilets in the Gill, which are locked and have been since about 6 but the lights are on. I wonder why. I am reminded that SLDC were talking about closeing all the toilets in Ulverston. I read somewhere that it costs 800,000 a year to keep all of the toilets in the SLDC area open. Well if they leave the lights on in all the closed toilets you can see why there's a saving to be had here. I t may not be much but it could be quite a sizeable amount over a year. And then there's the carbon emissions that we are contributing to un neccassarily, so I want to know why we're doing this. The same goes for lots of shops and offices. The Ulverston business centre has big flourecent burning above it's doorway all night. HSBC has four floodlights on its sign. I could go on, but the end game here is that we need to have an awareness campaign to get these companies to turn off these lights. But especially I want SLDC to turn off the lights in the toilets that are closed.
If You know of any similar stories please let me know and I'll start listing them, perhaps on a new blog.

Ford park boot sales

We've been running our car boot sales at Ford Park now since early April and it's been patchy especially as the weather has not been the best. But every week it has gotten a little better but tonight with the onset of good weather we had thirty booters turn up and lots of browsers. These events are an essential fund raiser for our group and a time for the community to meet and chew the fat. We start at 5pm but today our first booter was on the field at 2pm. These booters work on a different time scale to the rest of the world by 4 we had almost 20 on the field. After all it is probably the best site in the area.
We ask peolple for a donation for entry , and charge 50 p for car parking, and if you want to have a stall it will cost you £5, so why not come and join us and keep helping to save Ford Park

Good to be gigging again

It's been so long since I did a gig, and I miss it like crazy, so it was great to get out the old bass guitar and boogie on down with The Good old Boys Blues band at the Coot last night. We played for a oy poloy wedding and with a five piece brass section to back up our back line. We had three rehearsals to pin down the set that they had last played 2 years ago at the same venue. We hadto play rather quietly because they have one of those infernal machines that turn off the power if your too loud. As it was we didn't turn it off till the last but one number. I re;;y enjoyed the gig, as did the wedding audience, I just hope it isn't another two years tilll we do the next one. If you've got a wedding coming up then please consider booking the good old boys blues band, they're special and will show you a good time

Councillors don't get paid

I just read on a comment on Geoffs blog that someone commented that we get a fat pay check for our work on the town council. Well let me tell you all that we on Ulverston town council don't get paid one penny for attending council meetings, or for any telephone calls that we make, or for any of the sub committees that we attend. Nada, Nothing, it is a volunteering role we take, for whatever reason, it is completely altruisic and yet we get all this flack. The bottom line is that we have virtually no powers, and no budget. You might ask why do we do it, this is something I ask myself, but sometimes you get something done that wouldn't have been done. Like getting our lamp posts painted, that's about the pinicle of our powers, and we don't get paid and why should we, I mean getting someone to get a pot of paint and a brush isn't a big thing, so why should we be paid. I do it because I care about our town, and I once thought I could make a difference, until I got myself elected, and then found out that the town council was pretty ineffective. But it's all we've got and if you think that you could do better then come and join us, stand for election, but understand that you won't be paid a penny for being an esteemed town councillor inUlverston, and be prepaired to take the flack.
