My little Pony

Nothing much of any consequence happened at last nights Council meeting. In fact there were very few of us there and no members of the public at all. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was a presentation by our accountant on the year end accounts.  For me not the spiciest of topics although one figure did jump out at me, and that was that we had managed to spend quite a bit of money on the do we had for opening the Hoad monument last summer. Now I know we had a lovely firework display and a big ribbon around the monument but when I heard that we had spent £20,850 and 44 pence I was amazed. Still we all had a lovely time, and you can't skimp on these grand openings.

I had a moan about bins outside Ford Park and the entrance to the Hoad not being emptied before long weekends and we agreed to send a strong letter to SLDC which should have a big effect, I hope. Oh and I thought I heard our Mayoress say that she was going to have to use my little pony in something to do with Carnival day, although as she doesn't project very clearly I may have misheard that bit.

We also had a bit of a moan about SLDC not looking after our flower beds and tubs. There was even a suggestion that we should manage our own beds and tubs. Mind you that would mean trying to find out how much SLDC allocate to doing this service in Ulverston which is probably unfathomable, so no doubt that won't happen, but a novel idea. Imagine.

Oh and I particularly liked it when the mayor was reminded that decisions are made by the democratic process, and not by one person.

All in all not especially exciting.

mushrooms in the cosmos

I've had a few weeks off since I attended the Council meetings, part due to other stuff going on and part to do with the fact that we haven't met for a while. We've now got ourselves a new mayor, or should that be Mayoress. She introduced an item about disabled parking, which was, I must say, a very valid complaint about us as a council not being informed about charges that have been introduced in SLDC car parks for disabled drivers who now have to pay to park. I was drifting a bit as she has a tendency to mumble but as she was getting worked up and animated about this issue of how we, as a town council, had been ignored I heard her say that 'we're just mushrooms in the cosmos'. At that point I woke up. I hadn't put our Mayoress down as a mushroom type of person, was this the field mushroom or maybe the magic variety, and as she had linked in the cosmos, well I could only assume the latter. Of course what she was trying to say was that the cosmos that is South Lakeland district Council, would I suppose, be represented by one of those big fungi like Giant Polypore, (Meripilus Giganteus)  and that Ulverston Town council was simply a not in their league and was but a humble Fairy Parasol, (Coprinus plicatilis). Anyway it got my attention and I'm sure will be a headline in the Evening Mail in the coming days.

On my way home I passed by the Gill car park and happen to notice a bit of A4 tie wrapped to a blue pole in the disabled area of the car park. In about 2 point font it was a legal notice telling disabled people that they will now be charged..
