Out of the hundreds of suggestions that were posted at the original meeting at the Glaxo club we discovered at the results night that very few of them were valid, or relevant to the county councils remit. This was because what we hadn't been told, or what was not made clear was that anything to do with private cars would be given a very low priority.
You see the plan was to help us cut down on our towns carbon footprint. This meant that any ideas that benefited pedestrians or cyclists or public transport would be considered as a priority.
So top of the list of things that the CCC will do to improve things in Ulverston is to erect a notice board in the town centre which will tell us what times the trains run, cost £2,500. All I can say is this better be a very snazzy notice board.
The other "major" improvements were a pavement in theatre st. and a smooth crossing of Market st for wheelchairs, oh and some secure bike racks.
The meetings were badly attended, so it didn't really represent the views and ideas of Ulverstonians, but even if the whole town had turned out I don't think we would have come out of this with much more.
I think the whole exercise was a bit of a wet lettuce, and CCC need to find a good communicator because Nick Raymond is hopeless at this job.
Maybe I missed something,in this whole exercise of consulting the people, but then so did the rest of us that turned out. I'm a big supporter of the need to do something about saving the planet, after all it's the only one we've got. But if we were supposed to be making big strides towards reduceing our carbon footprint then this farce of a community travel plan didn't really achieve much, if anything at all, but we may get a nice new notice board!!!!!!!
