Councillors don't get paid

I just read on a comment on Geoffs blog that someone commented that we get a fat pay check for our work on the town council. Well let me tell you all that we on Ulverston town council don't get paid one penny for attending council meetings, or for any telephone calls that we make, or for any of the sub committees that we attend. Nada, Nothing, it is a volunteering role we take, for whatever reason, it is completely altruisic and yet we get all this flack. The bottom line is that we have virtually no powers, and no budget. You might ask why do we do it, this is something I ask myself, but sometimes you get something done that wouldn't have been done. Like getting our lamp posts painted, that's about the pinicle of our powers, and we don't get paid and why should we, I mean getting someone to get a pot of paint and a brush isn't a big thing, so why should we be paid. I do it because I care about our town, and I once thought I could make a difference, until I got myself elected, and then found out that the town council was pretty ineffective. But it's all we've got and if you think that you could do better then come and join us, stand for election, but understand that you won't be paid a penny for being an esteemed town councillor inUlverston, and be prepaired to take the flack.
